Dreamers Achieve Success: Gautama Buddha

Gautama Buddha

Key Learnings

All component things in the world are changeable. They are not lasting. Work hard to gain your own salvation.

Nirvana is the extinguishing of the "fires" of desire, hatred, and ignorance, that keep the cycle of suffering and rebirth going.Nirvana is also regarded as the "end of the world", in that no personal identity or boundaries of the mind remain.

Buddha refers to one who has become awake through their own efforts and insight, without a teacher to point out the dharma.

There are these four ways of answering questions. Which four? There are questions that should be answered categorically [straightforwardly yes, no, this, that]. There are questions that should be answered with an analytical (qualified) answer [defining or redefining the terms]. There are questions that should be answered with a counter-question. There are questions that should be put aside.

Any kind of material form whatever, whether past, future, or present, internal or external, gross or subtle, inferior or superior, far or near, all material form should be seen as it actually is with proper wisdom thus: “This is not mine, this I am not, this is not my self.”

He abused me, he struck me, he overcame me, he robbed me' -- in those who do not harbor such thoughts hatred will cease.

No one saves us but ourselves, No one can and no one may. We ourselves must walk the path Buddhas merely teach the way. By ourselves is evil done, By ourselves we pain endure, By ourselves we cease from wrong, By ourselves become we pure.

Conquer anger with love, evil with good, meanness with generosity, and lies with truth.

Wisdom is born of meditation; without meditation wisdom is lost. Knowing this twofold path of gain and loss of wisdom, one should conduct oneself so that wisdom may increase.

To cease from evil, to do good, and to purify the mind yourself, this is the teaching of all the Buddhas.

Faith is the best wealth for a man in this world. Righteousness when well practiced brings happiness. Truth is the sweetest of flavors. They say the life of one living by wisdom is the bes.

Sensual passions are your first enemy. Your second is called Discontent. Your third is Hunger & Thirst. Your fourth is called Craving. Fifth is Sloth & Drowsiness. Sixth is called Terror. Your seventh is Uncertainty. Hypocrisy & Stubbornness, your eighth. Gains, Offerings, Fame, & Status wrongly gained, and whoever would praise self & disparage others. That, Namuci, is your enemy, the Dark One's commando force. A coward can't defeat it, but one having defeated it gains bliss.

Conquer the angry man by love. Conquer the ill-natured man by goodness. Conquer the miser with generosity. Conquer the liar with truth.

Just as a mother would protect with her life her own son, her only son, so one should cultivate an unbounded mind towards all beings, and loving-kindness towards all the world. One should cultivate an unbounded mind, above and below and across, without obstruction, without enmity, without rivalry. Standing, or going, or seated, or lying down, as long as one is free from drowsiness, one should practice this mindfulness. This, they say, is the holy state here.

The fool thinks he has won a battle when he bullies with harsh speech, but knowing how to be forbearing alone makes one victorious.

Things are not what they appear to be: nor are they otherwise.
