Start with Small Things
If we want to achieve big in life, we have to start small so that we have the control over it and execute it on time. We’re more likely to succeed if we take one small step at a time.
If you want to exercise regularly, start with the simple set of exercise routine for 10 to 15 mins so that you don’t wear out and lose interest.
Once you start realizing the benefits of your exercise routine, it will become a full-blown habit as it improves your quality of life.
Great things start small but with time and effort, it pulsates into a big achievement and you’ll harvest large benefits.
Concentrate on one Habit at a Time
Our habits form our character which reflects on the persona which we showcase to the outside world.
Watch your thoughts; they become words.
Watch your words; they become actions.
Watch your actions; they become habits.
Watch your habits; they become character.
Watch your character; for it becomes your destiny!!!
Self-Discipline is the key positive character to shape our destiny and to achieve our goals.
It leads you to the self-confidence and self-esteem which gives you the ultimate sense of worth. Your brain releases endorphins which makes you happy and proud.
Focus on one good habit which you want to develop or one bad habit which we want to get rid of.
By concentrating on one habit at a time you will not get exhausted and will see long-lasting changes.
By concentrating on one habit at a time you will not get exhausted and will see long-lasting changes.
Take a piece of paper and start writing the 5 good habits you want to develop in the year and the bad habits you want to repeal from your life.
To develop a habit of medium complexity it takes approximately twenty-one days of repetition.
Sacrifice immediate Gratifications
Jim Rollins in his fifty years of research found that people who sacrificed the short term gratifications or pleasure to enjoy the long-term rewards succeeded greatly in life.
“Discipline weighs ounces, but regret weighs tons.”~Jim Rollins
Don’t fall into the trap of immediate gratification; exert self-control over the pleasure to enjoy the long lasting reward down the line.
Set Active and Achievable Goals
Be SMART in setting the Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Rewarding, and Time-specific goals. Setting active goals that are specific, measurable, achievable instills discipline and gives you the direction.
To make sure your goals are clear and achievable, each one should be
Ø Specific (simple, sensible, significant)
Ø Measurable (meaningful, interesting)
Ø Achievable (agreed, realistic)
Ø Relevant (reasonable, results-oriented)
Ø Time bound (time-based, time/cost limited)
Create a goal’s checklist; write down your long-term goals with a specific timeline and act on the goals on the monthly, weekly and daily basis.
Track your progress towards your goal on daily basis, analyze what went wrong and revisit your goal setting to make changes to the action plan.
Examples of long-term goals can be,
- Become a better manager
- Start and build my own business
- Win a promotion
- Be healthier and happier
- Lose weight (Be Specific - “I have lost 5 pounds.”)
- Be more productive with the work
- Save ‘xxx’ money for the future
When you complete a goal it gives you the sense of accomplishment and satisfaction which will drive you to your next goal with renewed energy.

Break your Goals into Smaller Action Items
Your next action plan will be breaking your goals into small action items and map it with an immediate reward.
This will let you experience small wins and lets your success breed more success.
Over the period of time, these small accomplishments will lead you to your bigger goals and will give you immense happiness.
Manage your Time Effectively
Once you have the activity list done, organize it by priority to manage your time effectively. Use the 80/20 rule, which says that 80% of your results come from 20% of your activities.
Prioritize your tasks using the ABCDE methodology by considering the importance of the task,
A = Must do – serious consequences for non-completion
B = Should do – mild consequences for non-completion
C = Nice to do – no consequences for non-completion
D = Delegate – everything possible
E = Eliminate – everything you can to free up more time
You should concentrate on a single task until its 1oo percent complete.
“The discipline of good time management
spreads to all your other disciplines.”
Control and Eliminate Negative Thought Patterns
The biggest obstacle to success in life is fear of failure, expressed in the feeling that, “I can’t! I can’t! I can’t!”
Negative thought patterns have a depressing impact on our personal and professional lives and create fear in our inner mind.
The courage of discipline will help you in overcoming fear and in stopping the negative thought patterns.
Instead of avoiding the fear confront it, this will make the fear get smaller and you will become braver.
Repeat the words to cancel fear, “I can do it!” over and over, to build up your courage and confidence.

hard work to get you there.”
~ Haile Gebrselassie
Be Persistent in your Efforts
