The TRAI Stand on Net Neutrality

Howdy Dreamers,

Hope you all are doing great! Thanks for supporting this dreamer blog, we have crossed over 1800 page views.

In my previous blog article Net Neutrality - will it become a dream of past? , I have highlighted the importance of net neutrality for the open free internet access.

On 27 March 2015, Trai has issued a consultation paper titled "Regulatory Framework for Over-The-Top Service".

The consultation paper also touched issues related to net neutrality. The consultation paper on net neutrality by Trai can be found at this link.

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) had barred telecom service providers from charging differential rates for data services, effectively prohibiting Facebook’s Free Basics and Airtel Zero platform by Airtel in their current form.

  • No service provider can offer or charge discriminatory tariffs for data services on the basis of content.
  • No service provider shall enter into any arrangement, agreement or contract, by whatever name called, with any person, natural or legal, that the effect of discriminatory tariffs for data services being offered or charged by the service provider for the purpose of evading the prohibition in this regulation.
  • Reduced tariff for accessing or providing emergency services, or at times of public emergency has been permitted.
  • Financial disincentives for contravention of the regulation have also been specified

The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (Trai) has come out in favor of net neutrality in its recommendation paper released on 28 Nov 2017.

The Trai has mandated that Internet Service Providers should not deploy any discriminatory practices such as blocking, degrading or slowing down of certain web traffic while giving preferential treatment to any specific content at the same time.

The Trai made the decision after a series of consultations with stakeholders between 30 May 2016 and 4 January 2017.

The paper also suggests the formation of a regulatory body to watch and deal with any such violation of net neutrality.

The press release notification on the recommendations of net neutrality can be downloaded here.

As net neutrality provides a level-playing field to content providers and startups, we welcome the decision made by Trai and hope net neutrality will not become a dream of past.

Net Neutrality - will it become a dream of past?

What is Net Neutrality?

Net neutrality is the principle that Internet service providers and governments regulating most of the Internet should treat all data on the Internet the same to avoid discrimination by user, content, website, platform, application, type of attached equipment, or method of communication.

Why it is important?

The open internet is very crucial and important for the people of all communities and colors to express themselves freely and openly. It gives people the freedom to access any websites or data on the internet and share the knowledge across it to make the communities stronger.

  • It helps in building beautiful relationships across the globe by breaking color and community barriers.
  • It allows the artist to express them in the cloud and to be heard from anywhere.
  • It helps the student community to shape their knowledge and make their dreams come true in this competitive world.
  • It helps start-ups, entrepreneurs, and small business owners to launch their business
  • Free press to support the free flow of information in this digital age.

Who is stopping it?

Big Mobile and cable companies and their advocates filed lawsuits to end free open internet and net neutrality.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai - a former Verizon lawyer and their leadership has put forth a plan to gut the foundation of this openness. They have proposed to end net neutrality, and they are trying to force a vote on their plan on Dec. 14.

Who supports it?

The Internet should be competitive and open,” Google said in an early statement on the issue.

Dreamers, achievers, every common man from all parts of globe support net neutrality and we all deserve it.

Many major companies like Yahoo!Vonage, eBayAmazonIAC/InterActiveCorpMicrosoftTwitterTumblrEtsyDaily KosGreenpeace, along with many other companies and organizations are advocates of net neutrality and have also taken a stance in support of net neutrality. International Internet service providers like Cogent has made an announcement in favor of certain net neutrality policies.

I urge all dreamers to support the net neutrality and freedom of the open internet. Kindly join the millions of people in this battle to save the net.

Internet - the carrier of dreams!!!

The Internet is the carrier of millions and millions of dreams of people all around the globe!

It allowed people to build an empire around and made them so rich beyond their imagination!

In 1960  J. C. R. Licklider proposed a dream of building a global network in his paper Man-Computer symbiosis. In June 1966 Robert Taylor along with Larry Roberts from MIT built an interconnected system called  ARPANET.

The revolution...the first communication...

"We set up a telephone connection between us and the guys at SRI ...", Kleinrock ... said in an interview: "We typed the L and we asked on the phone,

"Do you see the L?""Yes, we see the L," came the response. We typed the O, and we asked, "Do you see the O.""Yes, we see the O."Then we typed the G, and the system crashed ...

Yet a revolution had begun"
                                                         -  Robert Taylor

In 1974, Internet transformed the exchange of ideas between all around the globe and now has more user adoption. IN early 2000 the Dot-Com bubble made the web a new killer app by bringing the buyers and sellers together.

By June 2017, 51% of the world's population is on the internet and it's still growing at a rapid pace.

Now with the deadly pairing with Mobiles, the Internet offers countless opportunities to build the apps of the future!!!

It started the dream of the future and still, the dream continues...
